About the town

Fly fishermen know it for New England's finest rainbow trout, rafters know it for the wild Kennebec River, and everyone who's ever traveled Route 201 to Quebec knows Thompson's Restaurant on Main Street. It's billed as the home of world-famous doughnuts.

Gossip is easy to get. The addition of Moose Alley has made for a popular nightspot. However, for good home cooking, service, history and town lore, you can't beat Thompson's at the end of town. Open since 1928, the restaurant's current owners are bent on making their doughnuts good enough to ship worldwide.

Located 50 miles from Augusta, Bingham is for many Quebec-bound road-trippers the last stop before leaving Maine at the Jackman border.

The "Gadabout" Gaddis Airport south of town was named after the Maine fly fisherman and outdoor writer who flew from the airport to follow fish and stories all around the country. He was known as the "The Flying Fly Fisherman." Maine Maritime Academy has an environmental scholarship named after him.
