Freeport

AP photo by Robert Bukaty
Googins Island, home to osprey and circled by sailboats, is part of the view from Wolfe's Neck Park in Freeport.
Known as the home of L.L. Bean's flagship store and outlet, Freeport has transitioned into a Maine shopping "must do." From kitchenware and pet pampering, to designer shoe and clothing attire, plan to make a few trips back to your parked car to unload shopping bags.

When it comes to dining, Freeport has you covered — from lobsters to lobster rolls. The Corsican is a locals' favorite that offers a variety of fare at reasonable prices. A trip down to the The Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster Co. on the wharf has become a tradition for many Freeport visitors.

There is a no shortage of accommodation options in Freeport. The coastal campgrounds are a great choice for those wishing to mix their shopping and dining adventures with the outdoors — Recompence Shore Campsites is a family-friendly gem near Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park and Freeport/Durham KOA is a great choice inland.

Traditional bed & breakfasts dot the downtown district, and a few larger hotel chains have recently put their stamp on accommodation offerings in town. If you're in the mood to be pampered, be sure to check out the Harraseeket Inn.

If you have a group you may want to think about renting a vacation house. Wherever you stay, make your reservations as early as possible — Freeport gets busy during the summer months and school vacations.

There is more to Freeport than shopping. Wolfe's Neck Farm is a family-friendly spot to bring the kids and the nearby Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park offers beautiful ocean views, hiking and picnicking opportunities. Explore nearby Bradbury Mountain State Park, where after a short hike you can experience the best view around.
