About Pittsfield

INCORPORATED: Settled in 1794. It was incorporated as the town of Warsaw in 1819. In 1824, the name was changed to Pittsfield in honor of William Pitts of Belgrade, who was a large landowner in town.

LOCATED: Halfway between Waterville and Bangor off Exit 150 on Interstate 95, it is nestled next to the Sebasticook River.

HISTORY: Maine Central Institute, the prep school attended at no cost by area youths, was established in 1866 and remains a major reason people reside in Pittsfield. The Penobscot and Kennebec railroad came in 1855 and was renamed the Maine Central. Downtown Pittsfield was ravaged by a fire in 1881 and rebuilt.

THE TOWN has six public parks, a large number for a town with a population of 4,200. It offers its residents an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, basketball courts, ballfields, a batting cage, tennis courts and the nearby Sebasticook River.
