Museums in Maine

Mainers love their history and their art, and they seem to have a lot of trouble throwing things away. The result is a lot of museums in the state, displaying everything from fine artworks to the 19th-century ways of life of a logging family.

With perpetually significant maritime ties, one can expect all manner of museums devoted to the trades of the sea, both past and present. There are several 'discovery' museums, featuring unique interactive displays designed to intrigue and challenge the little ones. Yankee history runs deep in these parts, and nearly every town has its own historical center brimming with genealogial records and local artifacts. And as you look around - at Maine's architecture, it's small-town way of life and serene coastal villages - you see that history and beauty are ever present and all around us.
